Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns by dentist in Hillsboro, OR.At North Hills Dental in Hillsboro, OR we're proud to offer dental crowns made from a variety of materials to our patients. Crowns are a type of dental restoration that can protect and strengthen, or fully replace a damaged tooth. Your crown will also be custom made, so it appears completely natural alongside the rest of your smile.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a prosthetic cap or covering that encases the entire surface of a damaged tooth. The crown restores your tooth to its original shape and size and is custom made to match the rest of your smile. Crowns both protect and strengthen your tooth structure and often save teeth that couldn’t be restored by fillings or would otherwise have been extracted. Crowns can also be used to replace teeth when they’re used atop an Implant, or as anchors for larger restorations like a bridge. With proper care and good oral hygiene, your crown could last 5-15 years. Crowns can be used to treat many dental concerns, including:

•  Broken or fractured tooth
•  Decayed teeth
•  Fractured fillings
•  Large fillings
•  Cosmetic enhancement
•  Following a root canal

Types of Dental Crowns

Crowns can be made from a variety of materials. Three common types of crowns we use are porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, and all metal. All porcelain crowns are usually recommended for crowns that’ll be placed over teeth in the front of the mouth because they are aesthetically pleasing and look very natural. These crowns are strong, durable, and highly resistant to wear as well as beautiful.

Crowns that are made of porcelain fused to metal combine the great aesthetics of porcelain crowns with the strength of metal restorations. Crowns that are made of purely metal are the most durable but will not match the color of your surrounding teeth, so they’re usually recommended for back teeth and molars.

Metal crowns are also great options for patients who grind their teeth. Crowns made from base metals will be the most cost-effective solution, whereas crowns made of gold or high-noble metals are the most expensive option. Ultimately, only you and Dr. Rowley will be able to determine which type of crown will be the best option for you and your smile.

The Dental Crown Procedure

You can typically expect to schedule two appointments when you’re ready to receive your dental crown. During the first, we’ll take molds and impression of your tooth so that we can create your custom crown. You’ll then receive local anesthesia and Dr. Rowley will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to better fit the crown.

At the end of this appointment, you’ll receive a temporary crown. At your second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed, your tooth will be cleaned again, and you’ll receive your new, permanent crown. We’ll ensure that the spacing and bite are accurate and give you a few simple care instructions.
