Taking Care of Emergencies at Home
Emergencies are scary; there is no doubt about that. However, there are some emergencies that are not that serious and can be treated right from your own home. Once such emergency is when you bite your lip, tongue, or cheek. While painful, these common injuries are rarely dangerous. If the injury causes bleeding, place a piece of moistened gauze over it and apply gentle pressure. Any swelling or pain you can be managed with an over the counter pain reliever or an ice pack wrapped in a towel.
If your bleeding lasts for more than 15 minutes, then you should seek emergency treatment at the ER. Another common issue that can sometimes be handled at home is a toothache. In many instances, a toothache can indicate an infection, but sometimes, it is simply caused by a piece of food or other obstruction stuck between your teeth.
Before you call the office, brush and floss your teeth thoroughly, but gently. Then rinse your mouth with a salt water solution. If you are unable to dislodge anything, or you notice other symptoms that point toward an infection, call us right away.
